Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi was sworn in on 24th January 2019. He emerged victor against his rival Martin Fayulu of the national election of 30th December 2018 with 38.5 percent and 34.8 percent respectively. During his swearing in, the New Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi abruptly stopped as he was taken ill during his inauguration speech.
He walked back to his seat then asked for glass of water which he was served urgently. President Felix Tshisekedi aged 55, claimed that was exhausted due to long campaigns and election activities. It’s alleged that his bullet proof vest was too tight thus interfered with his breathing system. He later took himself back to podium to accomplish his historic speech. The son of the veteran opposition leader of Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party, late Etienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba is now the President of Democratic Republic Congo.
However, at some point of time, he may give directives to repatriated the body of his late father who died in Belgium for burial. Etienne Tshisekedi died on 1st February 2017 at the age of 84.
Congo has a history of unpeaciful transition of power for so many years. However, the close rival of Felix Tshisekedi candidate Martin Fayulu endorsed him just like the outgoing President Joseph Kabila who urged the nation to support their new head of state.
Joseph has left great legacy for peacefully handing over of power in DRC. Joseph Kabila took power after death of his father Laurent Kabila in 2001.
He was the youngest president in Africa at the age of 29. Laurent Kabila ruled the country after Mobutu Sese Seko who was overthrown by Rwanda, Uganda and other forces.
Then, the country was called Zaire. Congo is one of the richest country in Africa worth trillions of dollars’ of mineral wealth. It can only enjoy its resources if there is peace, no dictatorship and tribal war. God bless Congo!
